Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is a term covering a suite of innovative technologies which make use of unique chemical and physical properties of very small particles (nanoparticles). While not being substantially different in chemical composition from larger particles, at these very small sizes the physical properties in particular can differ to those of the larger particles. While many nanoparticles are novel they do occur naturally with wood smoke particles being an example. Australia’s food and grocery industry has long recognised the importance of innovation and new technologies in the production of food, beverage and consumer products and ingredients. The food and grocery industry thoroughly assesses new ingredients and materials prior to use to make sure they are safe, no matter what their particle size.  Also, such novel technologies are required to go through formal regulatory approval before they are permitted to be sold.
