Packaging plays an important role in protecting the safety, quality and integrity of food, beverage and grocery products. Studies have found that packaging has an environmental impact equivalent to approximately 10-15% of the environmental impact of the product.
The AFGC supports a packaging regulation framework that reduces the environmental impacts of packaging, while acknowledging the broader benefits of packaging and allowing for innovation in packaging design.
The AFGC supports the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) as the primary, national approach to reducing the environmental impacts of packaging waste. Tanya Barden, AFGC Director Economics and Sustainability is the Chair of the National Packaging Covenant Industry Association, which is the service delivery body for the APC. The AFGC supports the current reforms the NPCIA is undertaking to ensure that its activities are relevant, strategic, targeted and well governed.
