This AFGC State of the Industry report is the fifth in the series. It consists of an extensive set of historical and updated data which collectively describe the broader food and beverage, grocery and fresh produce sectors, as well as the important contribution they make to the Australian economy.

The Australian food and beverage, grocery and fresh produce industry had a total turnover of $111.2 billion in the 2011-12 financial year. Food and beverage processing contributed $88.7 billion, grocery $16.9 billion and fresh produce $5.5 billion. The industry represents 27.5 per cent of the total Australian manufacturing industry turnover.

In 2012-13, the food, beverage and manufacturing industry employed approximately 298,825 people. Total employment consisted of 222,000 people employed in food and beverage manufacturing; 30,744 employed in grocery manufacturing and 46,081 people employed in the fresh produce sector.
