Australia’s food, beverage and grocery manufacturing industry is vitally important to the nation’s future prosperity. It is core to the wellbeing of all Australians, delivering safe, healthy food and groceries to 22 million Australians every day.
It is Australia’s largest manufacturing sector, representing 28 per cent of total manufacturing turnover. It is comparable in size to the Australian mining sector and is more than four times larger than the automotive sector.
The industry has an annual turnover of $100 billion and contributes almost four per cent to GDP. It employs 315,000 people, half of whom work in rural and regional Australia.
Located primarily along Australia’s eastern seaboard, more than 80 per cent of production by turnover is located in Victoria, New South Wales or Queensland. It exported $25 billion in value-added products in 2008-09.
