A commitment by Woolworths to label 100 per cent of its private label products with Daily Intake Guide (DIG) front-of-pack nutritional labels has been applauded by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) today.
DIG thumbnail labels already feature on more than 4000 supermarket products across Australia and Woolworths’ plans to increase the use of DIG to its full range of products within the next 12 months.
DIG front-of-pack labels offer an easy-to-follow tool that gives people information to formulate a daily eating plan according to their individual needs and activity levels. The thumbnails outline the amount of energy, fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt in a standard portion of the food and how that translates to average daily intake. AFGC Chief Executive Kate Carnell said industry has been working closely with retailers and key stakeholders as part of an ongoing awareness-raising campaign of DIG over the past four years.
“Woolworths has followed in the footsteps of industry to promote the use of DIG, which is an ideal way for people and families to formulate a daily eating plan according to their individual needs and activity levels,” Ms Carnell said.
Earlier this year, AFGC launched the new Healthy Eating, Made Easy campaign for DIG featuring Community Service Announcement (CSA) television adverts and an updated website www.mydailyintake.net, which includes a range of nutritional information.
“When choosing foods and drinks, you can use DIG thumbnails to easily balance your energy intake during the entire day,” Ms Carnell said.
AFGC and its retail partners will continue to roll out user-friendly consumer education material in retail stores and magazines to ensure consumers know how to use the nutritional information to put together a balanced diet.
