The food, beverage and grocery products industry is Australia’s largest manufacturing sector.
It represents 28 per cent of total manufacturing turnover, is comparable in size to the Australian mining sector and is more than four larger than the automotive sector.
The industry has an annual turnover of $100 billion and contributes almost 4 per cent to GD. It employs 315,000 people, half of whom work in rural and regional Australia.
The industry is located primarily along Australia’s eastern seaboard. More than 80 per cent of production by turnover is located in Victoria, New South Wales or Queensland. It expored $25 billion in value-added products in 2008-09.
